ITV drama Unforgotten is returning to our screens with a new detective chief inspector at the helm for season five.
Following the departure of DCI Cassie Stuart at the end of season four, there is a change of personnel for the cold-case crew.
Sinéad Keenan takes on the role of DCI Jessica James for season five but there will be plenty of familiar faces back in the incident room to jog memories.
Here’s when the new season starts, and a refresher on what happened last time around.
When does Unforgotten season 5 start?
The first episode of the fifth season of the police drama will air at 9pm on ITV1 on Monday 27 February.
It will be available as a complete series on ITVX after the first episode has broadcast.
There are six episodes in total, which will be shown weekly on ITV1 in the same time slot.
Who is in the cast?
He admitted on Twitter he was “delighted” the show had been recommissioned by ITV.
Others returning to try and solve long-forgotten police cases include Jordan Long as DS Murray Boulting, Lewis Reeves as DC Jake Collier, Carolina Main as DS Fran Lingley, Georgia Mackenzie as Dr Leanne Balcombe and Pippa Nixon as DC Karen Willetts.
Sunny’s fiancée Sal, played by Michelle Bonnard, will also make an appearance.
What happened in season 4?
In case you had forgotten, the last series ended with dramatic scenes as DCI Stuart sustained serious head injuries in a car crash.
Although she and her team successfully solved a murder case involving a group of corrupt police cadets, some of whom had now risen through the ranks, the show ended on an unhappy note as Sunny delivered the eulogy at his boss’s funeral.
The season focused on the murder of Matthew Walsh, whose frozen, decapitated remains were found in the first episode.
Fiona Grayson, Liz Baildon, Dean Barton and Ram Sidhu – all former police trainees – were the prime suspects.
It turned out Matthew was killed by Dean in a revenge attack. Dean’s brother Stephen was murdered by Matthew, who was the leader of a rival gang, and Dean decided to avenge him.
The detectives were able to get to the bottom of the case by looking into the origins of a fountain pen Stephen had purchased for Dean before his death.
According to Keenan, season five promises a bumpy start for both the new boss and her right-hand man as they are at “loggerheads” for the first few episodes “jostling for position” before they learn to work together.
Where was Unforgotten season 5 filmed?
Given that the show is mainly set in London, it is unsurprising that much of it is also filmed there.
Several scenes were also filmed in Tilbury in Essex, and Bath in Somerset.
The new season will also see the detectives travel to France, with filming having taken place in Paris.
Writer Chris Lang tweeted after filming wrapped in the French capital last year: “Et c’est une ‘wrap’!! Series 5 of #Unforgotten now in the can.
“Thank you to our French crew for their sterling efforts in Paris, see you all on the other side of post production in January. Au revoir.”
