Boris Johnson has questioned the legitimacy of the Commons inquiry into whether he misled parliament over partygate after Keir Starmer asked Whitehall investigator to be Labour’s chief of staff.

In an extraordinary statement, the ex-prime minister said an interim report published by the Privileges Committee suggested he has already been cleared by their inquiry.

Mr Johnson said the proposed appointment of Ms Gray by Sir Keir meant it was “surreal” that the committee’s probe was relying on her report into partygate.

He added: “‘I leave it to others to decide how much confidence may now be placed in her inquiry and in the reports that she produced.”
