Who won Dancing on Ice 2023?
Olympic gymnast Nile Wilson and his skating partner Olivia Smart were crowned this year’s champions of Dancing On Ice.
After being declared the winner, an emotional Nile praised the show. “If Dancing on Ice has anything to say of entertainment, we’ve got 11 human beings all different shapes and sizes stood on this stage tonight with an allocated time to get good at something and we proved that we can do that,” he said.
“So what an inspirational show. If you put your mind to something and you work hard you can achieve anything you want.”
Wilson won a bronze medal in the men’s horizontal bar at the 2016 Summer Olympics and was a member of the silver-medal-winning British team at the 2015 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships.
Who came second?
Essex, 32, congratulated the winners, saying: “I’m so happy for Nile and Olivia. I missed a few steps but literally, the best time of my life, thank you, everyone.”
After The Vivienne was voted off, she said: “It’s been the most amazing experience. I’m so used to living out of a suitcase on a tour.
For their first dance of the show all three finalists scored a perfect 40, wowing judges Jayne Torvill, Christopher Dean, Oti Mabuse and Ashley Banjo.
The three finalists all skated an original routine and performed in a skate battle to whittle it down to two remaining contestants.
The final two couples then paid homage to the famous Bolero routine which saw show judges Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean win gold at the Winter Olympics in Sarajevo in 1984.
After Wilson’s performance, Dean said: “It is an emotional dance and when you get to do it, you feel it and that’s what we wanted to pass on to you and you felt it tonight”, while Torvill added that what she had liked about their version was that they had lots of moments from the original but “still made it their own”.
Essex and his partner Vanessa Bauer also danced the routine in the classic purple outfits.
Reflecting on Essex’s growth, Dean said: “You have come so far. I remember when we saw you on the ice way back when you couldn’t stand up, you were falling all over the place, it didn’t look like it was the job for you. You’ve made us look silly because you’ve come here, you’ve gone through all the competition, you’ve got to Bolero and you finally performed that with emotion.”
