After eight weeks of preening, flirting and coupling up the winners of Love Island 2023 have finally been declared.

It was a tense live final on Monday night for the four remaining couples at the villa in South Africa as the ninth series of the ITV show reached a climax.

Here’s how it played out and who stole the Love Island crown.

Who won Love Island 2023?

Sanam Harrinanan and Kai Fagan were crowned the winners of the 2023 series after making their declarations of love for each other.

“You charmed me with your smile and melted me with your warm brown eyes”, social worker Sanam told Kai, “I was hooked by your intelligence, values, kindness and you always manage to make me laugh.

“You’ve made me realise my worth and I can’t wait for us to one day be official.”

While Kai, a science and PE teacher, replied: “My time here has been a dream since I met you.

“Sanam, you’re one of a kind and I’m so happy to have you in my life because I adore you and can’t wait to see what the future has in store for us.”

Aside from the prestige of the title, the couple will also share a £50,000 prize pot.

Runners up were: Lana Jenkins and Ron Hall in second place, Samie Elishi and Tom Clare in third place and Tanya Manhenga and Shaq Muhammad in fourth place after a public vote.

How did Kai and Sanam become the winners in a tense final?

The 24-year-olds appeared to seal the deal with the public when they made their final speeches to each other sharing their reasons for wanting to be together.

Sanam told Kai: “You made me feel like a princess and the only girl in the world.

“I can’t wait for you to come round to my house and for my mum to cook you Caribbean food.

“You’ve shown me my worth.”

Kai admitted: “When I came into the villa. I struggled to find love.

“Then at Casa I found you. The most caring, beautiful, girl I’ve ever met.

“Every conversation we have draws me closer to you. I don’t think I’ve ever met someone as compatible as you.

“My time in here is literally been in a dream with you.”

He credited their similarities, love of working with children and desire to make a difference in the world, with helping their relationship.

Love island fans struck by their apparent genuine affection for each other took to social media to share their views.

One wrote: “The first time I’ve actually liked a final speech Kai and Sanam.”

Another noted the speeches “don’t make me cringe and that says enough”.

What happened on the final day in the villa?

The couples began their day with a dance lesson with professionals in preparation for the Love Island Ball.

Then the girls were whisked off for a luxurious spa day to relax ahead of the big night.

Later, decked out in tuxedos and elegant dresses, the couples gathered by the pool to share with each other their emotional declarations of love in front of a heart-shaped arch before a final dance at the Love Island Ball.

Viewers were also treated to a montage of the highlights of series nine before the show was over.
