Strike action may have been paused on Britain’s railways as the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) engages in discussions with rail operators over pay, but there will still be disruption to train services over the Easter weekend due to engineering works.

Easter is often a difficult time for train travel, as the bank holiday is a busy time for improvements to the network.

No trains will run to or from London Euston for the entire weekend, and there will also be significant disruption on a number of other key routes. Here’s what to expect for each operator.

Avanti West Coast

Due to engineering work between London Euston and Milton Keynes Central, trains will be unable to run between these stations. Trains from the north and midlands will terminate at, and start back from, Milton Keynes Central or Rugby. Buses will run between Milton Keynes Central and Bedford, and between Rugby and Kettering, to connect with alternative train services to and from London St Pancras International.

Due to long term engineering work in the Carstairs area, journeys between Carlisle and Glasgow Central / Edinburgh will be disrupted. Journeys between these stations may involve using a replacement bus, or being diverted via an alternative route. More details to follow.

Due to engineering work between Pitsea and Upminster via Grays, on Sunday and Monday buses will replace trains between:

  • Grays and Upminster via Purfleet and Rainham
  • Pitsea and Chafford Hundred via Grays

Caledonian Sleeper

Due to engineering work closing parts of the West Coast Main Line between Scotland and London Euston, services will be retimed and diverted and will be unable to call at Watford Junction, Crewe, Preston, Carlisle, Carstairs or Motherwell.

Additionally, all services will arrive at, and depart from, London Kings Cross instead of London Euston.

Chiltern Railways

Due to engineering work between Beaconsfield and Aylesbury Vale Parkway, buses will replace trains between these stations.

CrossCountry

Due to engineering work between Ely and Cambridge, buses will replace trains between these stations.

Due to engineering work between Reading and Basingstoke, trains will be diverted between Reading and Southampton Central. Services will not call at Basingstoke, Winchester or Southampton Airport Parkway, and journey times will be extended by up to 60 minutes. Replacement buses will run between Reading and Basingstoke / Winchester. For Southampton Airport Parkway, you can use alternative train services.

East Midlands Railway

Due to engineering work between Stockport and Sheffield, buses will replace trains between these stations on Saturday and Sunday

Due to engineering work in the Ely area, buses will replace trains between Peterborough and Norwich on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

On Sunday, due to early morning engineering work between Bedford and St Albans, the following services will terminate at Bedford. You can use Thameslink trains and replacement buses to complete your journey into London:

  • 07:00 Derby to London St Pancras International
  • 07:24 Nottingham to London St Pancras International
  • 07:51 Derby to London St Pancras International

On Monday, due to late night engineering work between Derby and Chesterfield:

  • 22:32 London St Pancras International to Sheffield service will be diverted between Derby and Chesterfield, arriving Chesterfield and Sheffield later than normal
  • 23:30 Sheffield to Derby service will be diverted between Derby and Chesterfield, arriving Chesterfield and Sheffield later than normal

Elizabeth Line

Due to engineering work in the London Paddington area, the following Elizabeth line changes will be made:

No trains will run between Stratford and London Paddington. Trains that usually run between Shenfield and London Paddington will be amended to run between Shenfield and London Liverpool Street. Between London Liverpool Street and London Paddington you should use London Underground services.

Services between Abbey Wood and Heathrow Airport/Reading will run between London Paddington and Heathrow Airport/Reading only. The trains that run between Abbey Wood and Maidenhead will be cancelled altogether.

Gatwick Express

Due to engineering work at London Victoria, no Gatwick Express services will operate from Friday to Monday.

Great Northern

Due to engineering work between Ely and Cambridge, buses will replace trains between these stations.

On Sunday early morning engineering work is taking place between Alexandra Palace and London Kings Cross. Before 07:10, buses will replace trains between Alexandra Palace and London Kings Cross via Finsbury Park.

On Monday, due to early morning engineering work, before 05:20 trains towards London will not be able to call at Welham Green or Hatfield. Buses will run between Welwyn Garden City and Potters Bar to provide a connection with train services. Due to late night engineering work, after 23:30 trains towards London will not be able to call at Hornsey or Harringay. If you are travelling to/from these stations, you can use alternative services and travel via Finsbury Park/Alexandra Palace to complete your journey.

Great Western Railway

Due to engineering work closing the line between Reading, Newbury and Bedwyn, long-distance trains that usually run via Newbury will be diverted and retimed. Local services will be replaced by buses between Reading and Newbury/Bedwyn.

Due to engineering work closing the line between Reading and Basingstoke, buses will replace trains between these stations.

Greater Anglia

On Friday and Saturday, due to engineering work between Bury St Edmunds and Cambridge, buses will replace trains between these stations. Due to engineering work between Ely and Cambridge, buses will replace trains between these stations.

On Sunday buses will replace trains between Marks Tey and Ingatestone, between Witham and Braintree, between Norwich and Cambridge North, and between Bury St Edmunds and Peterborough.

On Monday buses will replace trains between Thetford and Cambridge North, and between Bury St Edmunds and Peterborough.

LNER

On Sunday, due to engineering work in the Leeds area, the 08:30 Leeds to Edinburgh service will be amended to start from York at 09:00. Some services throughout the rest of the day between London Kings Cross and Leeds will be amended or cancelled.

London Northwestern

Due to engineering work between London Euston and Milton Keynes Central, no trains will run between these stations. Trains from the North and Midlands will terminate at Milton Keynes Central. Buses will run between Milton Keynes Central and Potters Bar, not calling at Cheddington, between 07:00 and 22:00. Accessible mini bus services will operate between Cheddington and Leighton Buzzard for onward rail replacement journeys during this time. Buses will also run between Milton Keynes Central and Bedford, to connect with alternative train services to/from London.

Due to engineering work between Stafford and Crewe, buses will replace trains between these stations.

Due to engineering work between St Albans Abbey and Watford Junction, buses will replace trains between these stations.

Northern

Buses will replace trains between Rainford and Kirkby all weekend due to engineering works.

On Saturday and Sunday buses will replace trains between Hope and Sheffield. On Sunday there will be replacement buses between Dronfield and Sheffield, Nottingham and Sheffield, Leeds and Selby/York, Hunts Cross and Liverpool Lime Street, and Bolton and Preston.

Due to engineering work in the Rotherham area, trains will be diverted and cannot call at Rotherham Central on Saturday and Sunday. Buses will provide connections between Rotherham Central and Swinton/Meadowhall.

On Monday there will be changes to late evening services in the Liverpool, Chester, Manchester, Stockport, Blackburn, Leeds and Hull areas.

ScotRail

For the whole long weekend, due to major improvement work in the Carstairs area, most ScotRail services that operate via Carstairs are cancelled with a small number rerouted via Shotts. A replacement bus service will operate between Fauldhouse and Carstairs calling at Carluke which will connect with alternative ScotRail trains.

Due to engineering work in the Motherwell/Shieldmuir area, trains will operate hourly and will not call at Motherwell or Shieldmuir. Replacement buses will run between Bellshill and Wishaw, calling at Motherwell and Shieldmuir.

South Western Railway

Due to engineering work between Woking, Basingstoke and Overton/Winchester, a revised train service will operate between London Waterloo and Portsmouth/Exeter/ Weymouth/Alton. In addition, buses will replace trains between Woking and Basingstoke, Andover and Winchester.

On Sunday and Monday, due to engineering work between Clapham Junction and Wimbledon, an amended service will run, with trains not calling at Vauxhall or Earlsfield. Buses will run between Clapham Junction and Wimbledon, to provide a connection to/from Earlsfield. For Vauxhall, you can use London buses to / from the station.

Southeastern

On Friday, due to engineering work between Tunbridge Wells and Hastings, buses will replace trains between these stations.

On Saturday and Sunday, due to engineering work between London Charing Cross and London Bridge, no trains will run to/from/via London Charing Cross/Waterloo East.

  • Paddock Wood Line: Trains between London Charing Cross and Dover Priory/Ramsgate via Canterbury West will be diverted to run to/from London Victoria. 
  • Hastings Line: Trains between London Charing Cross and Hastings will run to/from London Cannon Street, and will be retimed as they will use an alternative route between London Bridge and Orpington. These trains will only run between London Cannon Street and Tunbridge Wells because of further engineering work. 
  • Maidstone East line: Services between London Charing Cross and Maidstone East will run from London Victoria instead, and will call additionally at Bromley South.
  • Hayes Line: Services between London Charing Cross and Hayes will run to/from London Cannon Street at a reduced frequency (every 30 minutes).
  • Grove Park Line: Trains between London Charing Cross and Sevenoaks will run to/from London Cannon Street. Saturday services between London Cannon Street and Orpington will not run.
  • Sidcup Line: Trains between London Charing Cross and Gravesend via Sidcup will be not run, and services between London Charing Cross and Dartford via Sidcup will run to/from London Cannon Street, calling at all stations between Lewisham and Dartford. 
  • Bexleyheath Line: Trains between London Cannon Street and Slade Green via Bexleyheath will be retimed and will run to/from Dartford. Services between London Victoria and Dartford via Bexleyheath will not run. 
  • Woolwich Line: Services between London Cannon Street and Gravesend via Lewisham and Woolwich will call at all stations between Dartford and Gravesend. Trains between London Cannon Street and Slade Green via Greenwich/Woolwich Arsenal will be retimed and will run to/from Dartford.

From Saturday to Monday, due to engineering work between Tunbridge Wells and Hastings, buses will replace trains between these stations.

Southern

Due to engineering work at London Victoria, no Southern services will be able to run to or from the station for the entire weekend. The following alterations will be made:

Amended services:

  • Brighton, Eastbourne / Ore, Portsmouth Harbour / Southampton Central / Bognor Regis, Littlehampton and East Grinstead services will be diverted to operate to / from London Bridge, running to an amended timetable with some extended journey times.
  • Horsham / Dorking services will be diverted to operate to / from London Bridge, running non-stop between Mitcham Eastfields and London Bridge. 
  • Trains between Streatham Hill and Sutton via West Croydon – amended timetable.
  • Trains between London Bridge and Caterham / Tattenham Corner via Purley – amended timetable.
  • Uckfield services will operate to / from East Croydon. Please use alternative trains between East Croydon and London.

Cancelled services:

  • Trains between London Bridge and London Victoria via Crystal Palace will not run.
  • Trains between London Bridge and Beckenham Junction will not run.
  • No direct services will operate between London and Reigate. Trains will run between Reigate and Redhill. You should use alternative trains between Redhill and London.
  • No trains will call at stations between London Bridge and East Croydon via Sydenham. You can use your ticket on London Underground services between London Bridge and Canada Water and on London Overground between Canada Water and Crystal Palace / West Croydon via New Cross Gate and Sydenham.
  • No trains will run between East Croydon / Clapham Junction and Watford Junction. Your ticket will be accepted on Southern replacement buses between East Croydon and Clapham Junction, London Underground between Clapham Junction / Victoria and Euston, and London Northwestern Railway services between London Euston and Watford Junction.

Thameslink

Due to engineering work in the East Croydon area on Sunday, trains to/from Horsham will run to an amended and reduced timetable. Most services will run between Bedford and Horsham, and will additionally call at Earlswood and Salfords.

Early morning engineering work is taking place between Alexandra Palace and London Kings Cross. Before 07:10, buses will replace trains between Alexandra Palace and London Kings Cross via Finsbury Park. For Moorgate, you can use your ticket on London Buses or London Underground between Finsbury Park/London Kings Cross and Moorgate.

Due to early morning engineering work between Bedford and St Albans, until 09:30 buses will replace trains between these stations.

On Monday, due to late night engineering work between Redhill and Horley, after 22:45 trains between Redhill and Horley will be diverted, and will not call at Earlswood or Salfords. Buses will run between Redhill and Horley to provide a service at Earlswood and Salfords.

TransPennine Express

All weekend, due to long term engineering work in the Carstairs area, journeys between Carlisle and Glasgow Central/Edinburgh will be disrupted. Trains to/from Edinburgh will run as planned. Trains between Manchester Airport and Glasgow Central will terminate at Carlisle, for onward rail connection via Avanti West Coast/ScotRail services or via rail replacement bus service.

On Saturday and Sunday, due to engineering work between Stockport and Sheffield, services between Manchester Piccadilly and Sheffield will be diverted via Huddersfield and will not call at Stockport. Journey times will be extended by up to 30 minutes. If you are travelling to/from Stockport you should change at Manchester Piccadilly for onward connections. There will be no train or bus services between Sheffield and Doncaster. If you are travelling between these stations you should use alternative operators trains and buses.

West Midlands Railway

Due to engineering work between Lichfield Trent Valley and Birmingham New Street, buses will replace trains between these stations.
